An overview of this role
We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Repository Management team within GitLab's Source Code stage. You'll help customers configure repositories with confidence so their GitLab projects support the way their teams work. As artificial intelligence agents increasingly write and manage code alongside people, you'll build guardrails that make development safe and trustworthy. You'll turn complex policy and repository management needs into reliable backend solutions that support people and the agents working on their behalf.
You'll work in one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas, using Ruby and GraphQL to improve a critical system that serves GitLab.com, self-managed instances, and GitLab Dedicated. Source Code provides the interface layer, through Gitaly, to the Git repositories that account for a large portion of GitLab traffic. With support from experienced team members, you'll help maintain high reliability through performance and structured query language tuning, caching, rate limiting, testing, observability, and resiliency. You'll collaborate with product management, product design, testing, security, user experience research, technical writing, Gitaly, Code Review, and Source Code Experience to deliver reliable and performant systems.
Learn more about the Create:Source Code teams in the GitLab Handbook.
What you’ll do
Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL.
Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting the reliability of this critical system.
Contribute to backend services, application programming interfaces, data models, and business logic for repository management.
Collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously, involving domain experts and seeking guidance when needed.
Use artificial intelligence agents for well-scoped work when they can speed up delivery without sacrificing quality, and critically review their output.
Write maintainable code that follows GitLab's standards and apply feedback from code review.
Help strengthen reliability by monitoring production health metrics, participating in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshooting incidents, contributing to root cause analysis, and improving observability and resiliency.
Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration while learning from others.
What you’ll bring
Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces, with experience using Ruby and GraphQL or the ability to learn them.
An understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
Experience contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based features in web applications and helping make that complexity reliable and maintainable.
Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with Git and collaborative code review processes.
Experience using artificial intelligence coding tools or agents, with the ability to review their output and recognize when additional guidance is needed.
Clear written and spoken English communication skills, including sharing useful status updates and collaborating in a remote, asynchronous environment.
The ability to manage assigned priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership of your work, and seek guidance for decisions that are difficult to reverse.
About the team
The functional team works across Europe and North America, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration. It includes six engineers, and this role offers an opportunity to grow your backend skills, learn from experienced team members, and contribute to our technical direction. We work closely with Code Review and Gitaly, alongside sibling teams covering Repository Sync & Interop, Source Code Experience, and Repository Scale, Performance & Git Infrastructure. We're maturing GitLab's branch protection offering while maintaining availability, reliability, and stability through bug fixes and focused technical debt work. Our roadmap includes Branch Rules, Codeowners, merge strategy options, and artificial intelligence-powered repository management and configuration.
We welcome candidates with different levels and types of experience. Many successful candidates don't meet every requirement. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiting team to assess your application.

SmartsheetAdded 12 Oct 2026
Remote · United KingdomSalary not disclosedEngineering
For over 20 years, Smartsheet has empowered teams to manage work seamlessly and scale solutions smarter. Now, in our most ambitious chapter yet, we are uniting human teams with AI agents. By orchestrating the work agents do best, automating manual tasks and uncovering insights at scale, we create the space for people to focus on what truly matters: judgment, creativity, and big thinking. That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day.
Smartsheet is building the AI connectivity layer that lets enterprise teams work through the AI assistants they already use - Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and ChatGPT. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is at the centre of that strategy, and this role owns its adoption and growth.
With 7,500+ organisations connected across five AI platforms and an Anthropic case study validating Smartsheet's position, MCP is one of the most strategically significant product areas in the company. This is an individual contributor role for a senior product leader who owns product strategy through an adoption lens, and who lives with customers and power users to bridge field signals with engineering direction. The core personas are the people pushing AI hardest - CLI power users, agent builders, and the teams wiring tools and agents into their daily work. You are their voice inside Smartsheet, and Smartsheet's voice to them.
This person operates as the product peer to the engineering lead for MCP, planning and launching together day to day. As the platform matures and this role builds the track record to take on more, we expect the scope to grow, potentially into leading industry-vertical specialisation (for example Pharma, Fintech, Construction) as those needs emerge.
You will work remotely from the UK and report to the Director, Product Management.
You Will:
Own the MCP adoption strategy and shape roadmap priorities based on usage and persona evidence, in partnership with the Director of Engineering who owns the technical roadmap.
Own the activation and adoption pathway, understanding why connected organisations don't become active tool callers, run research and data analysis against usage patterns, and shape product and go to market investments that convert connection into daily value
Champion CLI power users, agent builders, and tool calling developers as core product personas, spending real time with them, understanding their workflows across Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and ChatGPT, and making their needs legible to engineering and product leadership
Sit with customers on their actual use cases, run pilots and proof of concepts alongside client teams, capturing what they build with MCP tools and agents, and turning those engagements into showcases, reference stories, and adoption plays the field can run
Be the field enablement engine for MCP, building the demos, playbooks, documentation, and enablement content that helps Sales, Customer Success, and Solutions teams tell the MCP story and land it with enterprise customers
Document the platform for the people who use it, clear, current, use case driven documentation of MCP toolpoints, agents, and integration patterns that makes the ecosystem self serve for customers and internal teams
Partner day to day with the MCP engineering lead as product and engineering peers, jointly owning the go live and launch plan for MCP capabilities, from how features are shaped and released to how the adoption curve is driven afterwards
Help engineers see what customers see, bringing client use cases, research findings, and adoption data into engineering conversations so the team understands what to build to unlock more usage
Be the internal front door for MCP, help other teams understand the tool surface, see where their capabilities fit, and take part in building toolpoints with us, maintaining a federated view of tool coverage and capability gaps across contributing teams
Work closely with the Smart Assist team to ensure a coherent and aligned customer experience is delivered regardless of how customers access MCP capabilities, surfacing cross-team insights and dependencies
Own business metrics, usage patterns, and data signals, partnering with Business Intelligence to define success metrics for every capability, instrument from day one, and use post launch data to guide iteration and prioritisation
Author crisp product briefs and use case narratives grounded in customer evidence that give engineering and design unambiguous direction on the problem and the outcome
Drive cross-functional alignment across UX research, GTM, Customer Success, Security, Smart Assist, and platform teams to move capabilities from concept to GA and measure adoption
Represent MCP in leadership reviews and customer-facing conversations, including enterprise account engagements and external events, a leading voice for the platform inside and outside the company
Shape the commercial trajectory of the MCP platform, contributing to pricing, packaging, and monetisation decisions as the platform matures
Mentor incoming PMs and share platform and persona knowledge across the broader product organisation
You Have:
7+ years of product management experience, including delivering high-impact features and driving adoption within enterprise SaaS or B2B software products
Hands-on fluency with AI assistants, agents, and CLI tooling, you are a power user of the tools your personas use, and experience with Agent platforms or developer-facing AI tooling; MCP strongly preferred
Strong customer instincts, you know how to run structured discovery, synthesise signals from enterprise customers, translate customer needs into validated product decisions, and represent the customer voice credibly in technical and leadership conversations
A track record of driving adoption and growth for a platform, API, or developer-facing product, you understand activation funnels, know how to find why usage stalls, and can articulate technical value to non-technical stakeholders
Demonstrated field enablement and storytelling ability, you can turn a client engagement into a demo, a playbook, a piece of documentation, or a showcase that moves both customers and internal teams
Experience running customer pilots or proof of concepts and converting them into product evidence and reference stories
A data-driven mindset, you define adoption, funnel, and business impact metrics before you ship, and you use post launch data and research to guide iteration and prioritisation
Proven ability to navigate technically complex, ambiguous platform problem spaces and make clear scoping and prioritisation decisions across multiple engineering squads and product areas
Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional alignment across engineering, design, GTM, Customer Success, and Security, including dependencies across multiple product areas and teams
Enough technical fluency to be credible with engineers and power users, you can read the landscape, ask sharp questions, write clearly about tools and agents, and participate in architecture discussions without needing to own technical direction
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent the product area confidently in leadership reviews, external events, and directly with enterprise customers
Exposure to enterprise deployment complexity, regulated industries, admin governance is a plus
Ability to work in the UK on an ongoing basis
